Family bakers, Warburtons are encouraging the regions' youngsters to think about the environment and take part in a week-long recycling programme.
The bakery based on Billington Road, is offering local schools the chance to win a recycled picnic table.
As part of its National Bread Week 2010 celebrations, which marks the roll that bread plays in our daily diets, Warburtons has teamed up with one of its suppliers, British Polythene Industries, to produce picnic benches from recycled materials.
To take part in the programme, the family bakers are asking local schools to write to them, in no more than 50 words, and give details about how their school has been caring for the environment. Entries must be received by 5th March 2010. The chosen schools will then be asked to stage a-week-long collection before the Easter holidays (w/c 22nd March.)
Duncan Lees, General Manager, at the bakery in Burnley said: "We will be asking the schools to collect plastic bags and carrier bags."
At the end of the week, the recyclable materials will be collected from the school to be made into recycled picnic benches, that will be presented during National Bread Week in May.
Duncan concluded: "We're committed to minimising the impact of our business on the environment. With this activity, we're hoping to educate youngsters about the value and importance of caring for the environment, and the benefits it can bring. The picnic benches aim to reward their efforts and will be something that the teachers and pupils will be able to enjoy for years to come."
